Lunula pendants are ancient female amulets symbolizing feminine energy, fertility, and connection to lunar cycles. They were widespread among the Slavs and actively used during the Kyivan Rus period, which is why they are still found today during archaeological excavations across Ukraine. Lunulas were worn as pendants on necklaces, earrings, or headdresses and were traditionally crafted from silver, bronze, or gold.
Interestingly, lunulas are also found among Viking artifacts. This can be explained by the fact that Scandinavian warriors often took Slavic women as wives during their raids, contributing to the spread of traditional jewelry in northern cultures.
This necklace features a lunula pendant of a modern artisan design, preserving ancient forms while incorporating unique artistic craftsmanship. The combination of the lunula with carnelian beads adds a distinctive charm to the piece. Carnelian, a variety of chalcedony, has been used since ancient times and was considered a princely stone due to its rich hues and symbolic association with strength, wisdom, and grandeur. The warm glow of carnelian allows one to easily imagine a Kyivan Rus noblewoman wearing a similar necklace. And it feels almost magical that today, we can recreate this tradition.
Necklace length – 42 cm, with an extender chain featuring the signature SHTERNO logo, adding a few extra centimeters.
