This choker necklace is made on a rigid base and holds its shape well. The beads from two types of opaque chalcedony—heliotrope and red jasper—harmoniously combine and serve as an excellent background for the lunnitsa pendant. The lunnitsa is handmade based on historical examples, as a continuation of the traditions of Ukrainian jewelry. Red jasper is an opaque variety of chalcedony, distinguished by its rich red and reddish-brown hues caused by a high content of iron oxide. Natural patterns and stripes add a special beauty to the beads.
Heliotrope is a variety of chalcedony that belongs to the quartz group. Its green color is due to inclusions of chlorite, and the red speckles are from iron oxide. The name "heliotrope" comes from the Greek words helios (sun) and tropein (to turn), as, according to ancient beliefs, it would turn the sun's rays, reflecting them in its red speckles.
A Lunnitsa is a traditional female amulet that was popular in Slavic cultures. Its crescent shape symbolizes the connection to natural cycles and feminine energy. In Kyivan Rus', lunnitsas were worn as necklace pendants, earrings, or elements of headwear, and their discovery during archaeological excavations confirms the long tradition of this symbol on the territory of Ukraine.
The necklace length is 42 cm, and an extension chain with the signature SHTERNO logo adds a few extra centimeters.
