This zgarda embodies minimalist beauty and the natural texture of materials. The necklace is crafted with natural lava beads, whose porous surface gives the piece a unique texture and depth. The central elements are three brass Hutsul crosses—swargas—replicas of ancient designs. These crosses are truly unique, as they resemble solar symbols found among various ethnic cultures since the Neolithic era. It is believed that such "crosses" are pre-Christian symbols of the sun’s movement. In ancient times, people worshipped the sun as a life-giving force. Marking the sun's movement was essential—it signified the end of significant cycles and the beginning of new, equally important ones. These turning points included: the start of agricultural work, the harvest season, the time for storing provisions, and the transitions between the beginning, middle, and end of the year. At these moments, people would pause and honor these solar shifts with sacred celebrations—the echoes of which still resonate today: Koliada, Christmas, the feasts of Melania and Vasyl, Easter, the Green Holidays, Spas (Savior's Day), Pokrova, and others.
The beads in this necklace are made from solidified and processed volcanic lava. Its natural porosity makes the material lightweight yet durable, while the deep black color with a matte sheen enhances the piece’s bold and mysterious appearance.
Zgarda is a traditional Hutsul adornment consisting of brass crosses strung onto a solid metal wire, with structural elements known as “perelizhky” or “peremizhky.” It was fastened with a large, ornamented clasp called a “chepraga.” This necklace was not only a decorative piece but also a symbol of belonging to the community and spiritual protection.
