Zgarda with Amber, Green Venetian Beads, and 5 Hutsul Crosses
This zgarda embodies the deep traditions of Hutsul craftsmanship, enriched with exquisite materials. The base consists of natural amber, known for its warm golden hue, and exclusive green Venetian beads that create a harmonious contrast. The centerpiece features five brass crosses, replicas of ancient Hutsul zgardas, meticulously crafted by a Ukrainian mosyazhnyk (metal artisan). Handcrafted brass beads further enhance the necklace’s refined composition.
Amber is a unique natural material that formed millions of years ago from fossilized coniferous tree resin. Its warm tones range from honey to deep cognac, while its lightweight and organic origin make it particularly comfortable to wear. Throughout history, amber has been prized for its beauty and rarity, playing a significant role in European culture and jewelry craftsmanship.
Zgarda is a traditional Hutsul ornament composed of brass crosses strung on a solid wire with decorative spacers known as "perelizhky" or "peremizhky." These necklaces were worn as protective amulets and symbols of spiritual heritage. Venetian beads, which reached the Carpathian region through international trade routes, became an integral part of Hutsul jewelry. Venetian glassmakers have been crafting these beads since the 14th century, adorning them with colorful enamel designs that remain striking to this day.
Necklace length – 42 cm, with an extension chain featuring the signature SHTERNO logo for adjustable fit.
