This necklace embodies the deep traditions of the Carpathian region. The base of the piece consists of matte shungite beads, complemented by refined black Venetian beads and three brass crosses. Each cross is handcrafted by a Ukrainian master metalworker, recreated based on the design of ancient Hutsul crosses traditionally used in zgarda necklaces.
Shungite is a natural mineral with unique properties. Its deep black color with a subtle graphite sheen gives the necklace a reserved elegance. This stone is composed of carbon with a special structure, found in only a few locations worldwide. Since ancient times, it has been used for water purification and amulet crafting, as well as valued for its durability and natural matte luster.
The zgarda is a traditional Hutsul adornment made of brass crosses strung on a solid twisted wire, with elements called "perelizhky" or "peremizhky." The necklace was fastened with a large, ornate clasp known as a "chepraga." These necklaces were worn as a sign of community belonging and spiritual protection. The black Venetian beads that harmoniously complete the composition hold a special history. Since the 14th century, Venetian glassmakers from Murano have been crafting unique beads that, through trade routes, made their way to the Carpathians and became a valuable part of the traditional attire of the Hutsuls.
Necklace length – 42 cm, with an extension chain featuring the SHTERNO signature logo, allowing for adjustable sizing.
